Synonymous with defensive strength, attacking flair and passionate support, Italy have been at the epicentre of the story of football. World Cup winners in 1934 and 1938, the emergence of AC Milan and Inter in the 1960s, who won two European Cups each in the decade, coincided with a superb dispay at World Cup 1970, where they ran into arguably the greatest international team in history, Brazil. But Italian football is currently experiencing its most difficult spell in its history; Serie A has been surpassed by the Premier League and La Liga, while the failure to qualify for 2018 in Russia represented a low ebb for a team so intrinsically associated with the event.
