Synonymous with defensive strength, attacking flair and passionate support, Italy have been at the epicentre of the story of football. World Cup winners in 1934 and 1938, the emergence of AC Milan and Inter in the 1960s, who won two European Cups each in the decade, coincided with a superb dispay at World Cup 1970, where they ran into arguably the greatest international team in history, Brazil. In 1982, inspired by the goals of Paolo Rossi, Italy claimed their third title and towards the end of the decade Serie A emerged as the strongest domestic league in world football. AC Milan, spearheaded by Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten, were joined by a formidable Juventus team, with both sides featuring regularly in the finals of European competition throughout the decade. The national team suffered penalty heartache on home soil in 1990, and again in 1994, where a superb side containing the thrilling ability of Roberto Baggio were stymied by a functional Brazil in the final. A generation including Alessandro Del Piero, Francesco Totti and Christian Vieri largely underachieved until, in 2006, inspired by Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo, they lifted their fourth World Cup after defeating France in the final. But Italian football is currently experiencing its most difficult spell in its history; Serie A has been surpassed by the Premier League and La Liga, while the failure to qualify for 2018 in Russia represented a low ebb for a team so intrinsically associated with the event.
