Chiellini a doubt - How Italy could line up against Austria at Euro 2020

Italy talisman Giorgio Chiellini was forced off injured against Switzerland and is likely not ready for a full return

Italy may have been one of the most impressive teams at the European Championship so far, but they have also had to contend with their fair share of injuries.

Only three teams at Euro 2020 have progressed to the knockout stage with a 100% record in the group stage - Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Roberto Mancini's side impressively achieved this feat despite a raft of personnel changes for the final group fixture against Wales.

With Italy already qualified, the former Manchester City and Inter boss opted to rest a number of key players, and it worked like a charm as they would go on to defeat Wales 1-0 anyway.

Their injury issues have mainly come at the back.

Against Switzerland, Giorgio Chiellini was forced off just 24 minutes into the game and would go on to miss the Wales fixture. He has returned to training but it has been mostly away from the rest of the squad this week, so it is a big ask for him to return for the Austria game on Saturday.

If he doesn't make it, Mancini will have to decide between Francesco Acerbi and Alessandro Bastoni to partner Leonardo Bonucci, with the experience of the former likely to see him get the nod.

Alessandro Florenzi is unlikely to be fit also, so expect Giovanni Di Lorenzo to feature at right-back with the impressive Leonardo Spinazzola on the opposite flank.

With Marco Verratti fit and firing again Manuel Locatelli will probably be forced to start on the bench, with Mancini preferring the trio of the PSG midfielder, Jorginho and Nicolo Barella.

Up top we should see the return of Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile and Domenico Berardi after all three were rested versus Wales.
