The Scottish national team is the oldest in history along with England and the two nations competed in the first ever international football fixture in 1872. Scotland has a fierce rivalry with England and from 1872 until 1989 they faced each other each year until the tradition was scrapped before the 1990s, but the fixture has occurred either in competitive action or as a friendly seven more times since then. Scotland have qualified for the Fifa World Cup on eight occasions, but despite the presence of world class players such as Graeme Souness, Denis Law, Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish, and Jimmy Johnstone at one time or another, they have never qualified from the group stage. The biggest success and, indeed, failure came in 1978 when they defeated tournament favourites, Netherlands, 3-2 in their group with Archie Gemmill scoring one of the most memorable goals in the competition’s history. But a defeat to Peru and lowly Iran meant they failed to reach the knockouts. They took part in the 1992 and 1996 European Championship tournaments. Scotland have had some superb individual results in recent years but have not qualified for a major tournament since France in 1998. Dalglish has made the most appearances for Scotland with 102 caps and shares the joint-highest goalscorer record with Law, with 30 goals each. In domestic football, Scotland is home to one of the most passionate rivalries in the world between Celtic and Rangers.
