When the inaugural World Cup began in 1930, hosts Uruguay proved they were the team to beat. The nation won an Olympic gold medal in 1924 and 1928, and so were deemed worthy hosts by the newly created organisation, FIFA, to host the first tournament. Uruguay made the most of hosting duties, and won the tournament by defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final, with Pablo Dorado, Pedro Cea, Santos Iriarte, and Hector Castro all ensuring legend status. In the next two tournaments in 1934 and 1938, Uruguay refused to participate due to a feud with European nations, while the second World War meant to they would have to wait until 1950 to compete again. There they won their second World Cup after defeating Brazil 2-1 in the final in front of over 200,000 people in the Maracana, with Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia producing the biggest shock result football had seen until that moment. Uruguay is the smallest nation ever to win the World Cup, and the sixth smallest nation to even compete in the tournament. They are even more dominant in their home continent than on the world stage, and hold the record for the most Copa Americas won with 15, with their latest triumph coming in 2011 under the tutelage of Oscar Tabarez. That victory launched a new generation of stars for Uruguay, with Edinson Cavani, Diego Forlan, and Luis Suarez combining to form a devastating strikeforce. Domestically, Penarol are the most dominant club team and have won over 50 titles.
