About Russia

The Russian national football team, formerly known as the Soviet Union, has appeared in 10 World Cup tournaments over the course of their history. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia played their first competitive match against Mexico in 1992 and went on to feature in the 1994 World Cup, although they did not make it out of the group stage, something that have failed to achieve in any World Cup tournament. A semi-final appearance at the European Championship in 2008 aside, they enjoyed more success as the Soviet Union in major tournaments. They finished fourth in the 1966 World Cup, and claimed their only major tournament victory in 1960 when they triumphed in the first Euros in France. Valentin Ivanov and Viktor Ponedelnik were key to that victory and scored two goals each in the competition, with the latter scoring the winner against Yugoslavia in the final. Sergei Ignashevich has the most caps for his nation, while Oleg Blokhin has the most goals.
