Van Dijk returns – How Liverpool could line up against Norwich City

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that his rejuvenated side can get back to challenging for the Premier League this season

Liverpool fans will have a fully fit squad to watch as the Reds return to Premier League action.

Virgil van Dijk is poised to make his long-awaited return to competitive football for Liverpool as the Reds travel to Norwich City for their Premier League opener on Saturday.

The Dutchman missed the majority of last season after a knee ligament injury sustained in the Merseyside Derby and has featured prominently in pre-season with three appearances in total.

The last of those lasted over 70 minutes, and Jurgen Klopp said during the week that he, as well as fellow recovering centre-backs Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, were all ready to start.

And it will likely be the latter that joins van Dijk at the heart of defence, with Matip taking part in a full pre-season and coming through it all unscathed.

Alisson will be back in net behind them with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right, but Kostas Tsimikas is in line for a first Premier League start at left-back as Andrew Robertson is sidelined with an ankle injury.

A by-product of fit centre-backs returning to the side means Fabinho can assume his natural position in defensive midfield, but Klopp has a decision to make in front of the Brazilian.

Jordan Henderson and Thiago have only played 30 minutes each in pre-season after their respective Euro 2020 responsibilities, while youngster Harvey Elliott has featured heavily in friendlies and impressed with his quality.

James Milner and Naby Keita should start, though, given their consistent fitness and performances in pre-season. Keita in particular has a point to prove heading into his fourth season at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have enjoyed a full pre-season and are ready to start at Carrow Road, and are likely to be joined by Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese star scored a goal in each of Liverpool’s last two friendlies and heads into the campaign in better shape than Roberto Firmino, who has had a delayed preparation after taking part in the Copa America with Brazil.
