About Japan

Japan boasts an impressive history of qualifying for the World Cup after years bereft of a spotlight on the world stage. They qualified for the first time in France 98 and competed in the next five tournaments including Russia in 2018. Their successes of the past two decadesrs has led to an explosion of popularity of the sport in the country. In 2002 they hosted the competition along with South Korea and won a group containing Belgium, Russia, and Tunisia, with Junichi Inamoto scoring two goals in the first round. They were eliminated in the Round of 16 thanks to a goal from Umit Davala of Turkey. In 2014 they progressed again, with Keisuke Honda the hero in the group stage against Netherlands, Denmark, and Cameroon. They have won the Asian Cup a record four times and also came second in the 2011 Confederations Cup. Yasuhito Endo is Japan’s most-capped player, while Kunishige Kamamoto has the most goals.
