Spain finally got to winning ways in the European Championship and secured progression to the knockout stage in the process with a 5-0 victory versus Slovakia.
La Roja would have worried of it being another one of those days early on as Alvaro Morata missed a penalty, but they were given a gift not long after when Slovakia stopper Martin Dubravka inexplicably punched the ball into his own net.
Spain would go on to score four more goals on the night, including another own goal, as they eventually eased into the next round despite flattering to deceive against Sweden and Poland in their first two fixtures.

There was understandable controversy when Aymeric Laporte switched allegiances from France to Spain, but on the pitch it was a terrific acquisition for the latter. The Manchester City defender got on the scoresheet with a looping header into the top right corner, but it was his leadership at the back that was just as impressive. He looked to take the game to Slovakia and his distribution out of defence was remarkable. Laporte had 81 touches of the ball and misplaced just one pass out of 76 attempts. Incredible.

The player most involved in the goals on the night was Pablo Sarabia. It was his shot cannoning off the bar in the first half that proved too much for Dubravka to deal with, while he would eventually grab a deserved goal with an assured finish into the bottom corner. Overall he scored one and assisted another two which is a fine night's work.

Spain scored five goals and Alvaro Morata still couldn't get one. After Gerard Moreno missed a penalty against Poland, Morata was asked to step up against Slovakia. But, he displayed very little confidence as he sent a weak strike to the left which was saved. He had five shots on goal including three on target, so really should have opened his account.
