About Estonia

Estonia’s national team played their first match in 1920 in a friendly against Finland which they lost 6-0. In 1940, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union and did not declare independence again until 1991 when their national football team was re-established. Their first match as a Fifa-recognised independent nation took place in 1992 against Slovenia when they earned a 1-1 draw in Tallinn. Estonia have never qualified for a World Cup or European Championship tournament in their history, but came close to the latter in 2012. After finishing second in their qualifying group they faced the Republic of Ireland, but lost the first leg 4-0 at home before earning a 1-1 away draw in Dublin. Every two years they take part in the Baltic Cup with Latvia and Lithuania, and have won the tournament a record three times. Martin Reim has the most caps for his nation, while Andres Oper has scored the most goals.
