About Zambia

In October 1964 Zambia gained independence from the United Kingdom, and so their own national team was born. They were nicknamed the ‘KK 11’ in honour of their first president Kenneth Kaunda, and to date they have never qualified for a World Cup tournament. Tragically, Zambia made world headlines in 1994 when their national squad were involved in a plane crash whilst on route to a World Cup qualifier against Senegal in Dakar. Following a crash into the Atlantic Ocean, all 25 passengers and five crew members lost their lives, with the Zambian players subsequently buried together in what is known as the ‘Heroes Acre’ in Lusaka. They have enjoyed more success in their home continent of Africa, and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012. Christopher Katongo and Emmanuel Mayuka both scored three goals on the route to the final, when they successfully defeated Ivory Coast on penalties after a goalless draw. Katongo was also named player of the tournament. Kennedy Mweene has the most appearances for his nation, while Godfrey Chitalu has scored the most goals.
