About Ukraine

The Ukraine national football team has only been a recognised outfit by FIFA since their independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. As an independent nation, Ukraine played their first match against Hungary in April 1992 which they lost 3-1 in Uzhhorod. Ukraine made their debut in a major international tournament in the 2006 World Cup and their performance went beyond expectations as they reached the quarter-final stage where they were eliminated by eventual champions, Italy, in a match they lost 3-0. Legendary striker Andriy Shevchenko scored two goals in the group stage of the tournament to help his nation reach the last eight. Ukraine’s debut in the European Championship came in 2012, and as hosts of the tournament, their participation was confirmed without a qualification process. In their opening match they secured a 2-1 win against Sweden, but subsequent losses against France and England meant they were unable to make it out of the group stage. The nation successfully qualified for Euro 2016, but it proved to be a terrible tournament for the Ukrainians as they lost every match and did not score a single goal, leaving them as the first team eliminated. Shevchenko is their top scorer with 48 goals, while Anatoliy Tymoschuk has the most caps with an incredible 144 appearances for his nations. Domestically, Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv are the most reputable clubs in the top flight.
