About Syria

The Syria national football team first competed in World Cup qualifiers in 1950, and in the years since then they have failed to qualify for the tournament proper. Between 1958 and 1961 they competed in a union with Egypt as the United Arab Republic, but since that split the historical results have been attributed to the Egyptians, not the Syrians. Their best performance in their attempts to qualify for the World Cup came in 1986 when they reached the final qualifying round only to lose to Iraq. They were disqualified from competing in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers due to fielding an ineligible player, and due to the conflict in the country, were banned from playing on their home soil. They were set to miss out on the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, only for Malaysia to come to the rescue and offer to play as hosts for all Syria’s home qualifying fixtures. The nation has witnessed more success on their own continent and has qualified for five Asian Cups, whilst winning the West Asia Cup in 2012. Mosab Balhous has the most caps for his nation, while Raja Rafe has scored the most goals.
