Senegal have only featured at one World Cup tournament in their history, but their performance remains one of the most eventful and memorable debuts ever. In their first World Cup match they took on the reigning champions, France, and ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Papa Bouba Diop. It was one of the greatest upsets of all time and led by the likes of Diop, El Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao, and Henri Camara, Senegal reached the quarter-final stage before being eliminated by Turkey, with several of their stars going on to join elite European clubs such as Liverpool and Inter. Only three African teams have managed this feat in the World Cup - Senegal, Ghana, and Cameroon. The Lions of Teranga are set to double their tally of World Cup appearances in 2018. 2002 was a vintage year for the country, as their talented team also reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, only to suffer heartbreak in a penalty shootout loss to Cameroon. Camara holds the record for most appearances (99) and most goals (29), while ASC Diaraf are the most successful Senegalese club in their domestic league.
