Founded in 1926, the Polish Ekstraklasa is the top division of Polish football. It contains 16 teams. The season runs from July to May, and teams play each other both home and away to fulfil a total of 30 games before the league is split in two – the championship round and the relegation round. Thereafter, the teams within the respective groups play each other home and away once again. The Ekstraklasa has promotion and relegation linked to the Polish I Liga, the second tier. Two teams are relegated from the Ekstraklasa, and two teams are promoted from the I Liga, each season. Eighty different clubs have competed since its inception, with Gornik Zabrze and Wisla Krakow winning the most titles (14). The competition's all-time leading goalscorer is Ernst Pohl (186 goals).
