Football in Poland remains one of the most popular sports and despite the relatively low quality of the domestic competition, the Ekstraklasa, the national team has achieved moderate levels of success on the European and international stage. In 1974, guided by the goals of Grzegorz Lato (who would win the Golden Shoe), Poland finished in third place, defeating Brazil in the process. In the 80s another star player developed in the form of Zgibniew Boniek, and his performances led to another fine display, losing to Italy in the semi-final of World Cup 1982, eventually finishing in third place. Poland has an excellent record of qualifying for major tournaments and in recent years their successes have been spearheaded by Robert Lewandowski, the nation's top goalscorer in history. The Ekstraklasa's most decorated sides of the modern era are Wisla Krakow and Legia Warsaw.
