Founded in 2001, the Russian Premier League is the top division of Russian football. It contains 16 teams. The season runs from July to December, and teams play each other both home and away to fulfil a total of 30 games. The Russian Premier League has promotion and relegation linked to the Football National League, the second tier. Two teams are automatically relegated from the Russian Premier League to the Football National League, with two promoted teams going the other way and the third place being contested via a play-off competition between four sides. Thirty-four different clubs have competed since its inception, with Spartak Moscow winning the most titles. The competition's all-time leading goalscorer is Aleksandr Kerzhakov.
