Panama became prominent in 2018 as they qualified for the Fifa World Cup for the first time in their history. In the qualifying stages, it looked like they would just miss out on a berth in the tournament proper when Johan Venegas scored for Costa Rica, but a dramatic turnaround saw the them win 2-1 thanks to goals from Blas Perez and Roman Torres, who wrote himself into the history books of his country with a strike two minutes before the end to earn a World Cup spot. The nation has finished as runners-up in the 2003 and 2005 Gold Cup tournaments and won the Copa Centroamericana in 2009. Gabriel Gomez has the most caps for Panama, while Luis Tejada and Perez have scored the most goals.
