About Palestine

A football federation in Palestine was first established in 1928, but it would take 70 years before the national team was recognised by Fifa. In 1998 they played their first competitive matches against Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, and one year later received a bronze medal in the Pan Arab Games. The nation has not qualified for a World Cup tournament as of yet, but this can be at least partly attributed to the political climate in the country. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has meant that several Palestinian players have been refused travel visas by Israeli travel restrictions, meaning that a vital World Cup qualifier between Palestine and Singapore could not be played and instead of a rescheduled match, the latter was awarded a 3-0 victory without a ball being kicked. In 2015 they competed in their first Asian Cup, but failed to make it out of the group stage. Palestine’s greatest success was in the AFC Challenge Cup, which they won in 2014 after defeating the Philippines 1-0 in the final, with Ashraf Nu'man Al-Fawaghra getting the vital goal. Ramzi Saleh has the most appearances for his nation.
