Northern Ireland’s best outing at a World Cup may have been reaching the quarter-final back in 1958 in Sweden, but for a nation of just over a million people, they have made a disproportionately large impact given their size. In 1982, they were drawn in a group with Yugoslavia, Honduras, and the hosts, Spain. A win against Spain was required in order to ensure progression and Gerry Armstrong struck the winning goal, slamming his shot through the legs of Luis Arconada, securing himself a move to Real Mallorca in the process. Norn Iron also reached Mexico in 1986 but failed to progress past the group stages after being humbled by Brazil. One of the major regrets for Northern Ireland is that former Ballon d’Or winner George Best, recognised as one of the greatest players ever, never featured at a World Cup. At Euro 2016, they made their first appearance in that competition and reached the second round, defeating Ukraine in the group stages before losing narrowly to Wales. Pat Jennings holds the record for the most caps with 119 appearances, while their top scorer is David Healy. Linfield, Crusaders, and Cliftonville are the most well-known club outfits in domestic football.
