Matteo Guendouzi: Player Rating and performance vs Schalke

Hertha Berlin’s 3-0 victory over Schalke will make headlines in Germany as it confirmed a 30th consecutive match without a win for the Royal Blues, but it was also a match which saw Arsenal on-loan talent Matteo Guendouzi score a tremendous goal.

Here’s how a memorable afternoon panned out for French midfielder.

Guendouzi has been an ever-present member of Bruno Labbadia’s Hertha side this season, in a league campaign that has seen the capital side struggle for consistency.

However, it was the former Arsenal man who stepped up when called upon at the Olympiastadion on a cold, Saturday night to put his team in front.

⚽ ⏱️ 36’ After a few half chances from either side in the opening period of the match, Hertha eventually found a breakthrough mid-way through the first half thanks to Guendouzi’s tremendous finishing.

From a throw in deep in the opposing half, left-back Marvin Plattenhardt fired a long ball into the Schalke box before it was cleared to the edge of the box. Midfielder Matheus Cunha latched on to the loose ball and fired a shot towards goal but it bounced off a defender and landed at the feet of Guendouzi. The midfielder then composed himself, planted his left foot and used his right to curl it round the outstretched arms of Ralf Fahrmann.

The Arsenal talent then spent the rest of the match putting on a tremendous box-to-box effort with tackles, passes and shots aplenty as his side picked up a comfortable win in Berlin.

✔ IMPROVEMENT

Guendouzi has undoubtedly had to take his time settling into a Hertha team that has had a lot of money spent on it but there are unquestionably signs of the young player’s talent.

The French player has shown what he can do in the Bundesliga this season, with an 8.1 FC Rating in a recent 1-1 draw with Gladbach.

Besides that, the on-loan Arsenal talent has picked up averages varying from low to high six and sevens but again showed what he could do when on form against Schalke.

His 7.8 FC Rating against the Royal Blues is exceptionally encouraging and suggests there’s much more to come from Guendouzi in the second half of the season.
