Lionel Messi scored his 19th goal of the season in La Liga at the weekend as Barcelona defeated Sevilla 2-0.

The Argentine is currently on a marvellous goalscoring run, and has now netted the same amount of goals in the league as his perennial rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who also scored at the weekend as Juventus could only manage a 1-1 draw with Verona.

The two megastars continue to be a ray of light in bleak campaigns for Barcelona and Juventus.

Joining the famous twosome on 19 goals and 38 points in the race for the European Golden Shoe is Eintracht Frankfurt's Andre Silva. He scored, but was on the losing side after Werder Bremen defeated Frankfurt 2-1.

Kylian Mbappe is now just one goal behind those three as he scored two at the weekend for PSG, taking his tally to 18 for the campaign, on par with Inter's Romelu Lukaku who scored again.

Paul Onuachu of Genk and Georgios Giakoumakis of Venlo continue to bang in the goals to make the leaderboard, with only competition weightings keeping them from higher spots.

Robert Lewandowski, of course, scored again for Bayern, and he is now on 28 goals and 56 points for the campaign.

Can he be stopped?

A reminder: The five elite leagues - Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 - all carry a weighting of 2, meaning that a player will be awarded two points for every goal they score in these competitions.

For the leagues ranked sixth to 30 in Uefa's coefficients rankings goals scored are given a weighting of 1.5, and goals scored in a league outwith the top 30, goals are given a weighting of 1.

Ciro Immobile won the 2019/20 European Golden Shoe, scoring 36 goals for Lazio in a tremendous Serie A season.
