About this derby

Ferencvaros versus Ujpest is the most fiercely-contested derby in Hungary, and is the main derby of the capital city of Budapest. They are two of the most successful in the country, with Ferencvaros winning the most titles and Ujpest third, with MTK Budapest in between. The rivalry can be traced back to the political climate of Hungary in the 1930s. Ferencvaros were traditionally Germans in Hungary, while the supporters of Ujpest were Hungarians and Jewish. In the 1950s, Ferencvaros became the team of the opposition while Ujpest were embraced by the Ministry of Interior, meaning that the former considers the latter to be Soviet invaders. On the day of the match, Budapest goes into lockdown, with Line 3 of the railway system shut down to the general public so fans can be ushered to the stadium. There is a huge police presence in the city, but this does not always curtail the violence. Ujpest fans in particular have had major clashes with the authorities, and in 2013 were involved in a battle at the Budapest metro, while one year later the police used tear gas on the fans. As of 2018, Ferenvcaros have won almost double the amount of matches than Ujpest in the derby over all competitions.
