How Chelsea and Manchester City could line up in the Premier League

Chelsea welcome Manchester City to Stamford Bridge in what is what of the biggest games of the season so far

A vital three points will be up for grabs at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as Champions League winners Chelsea welcome Premier League winners Manchester City.

We are still early in the 2021/22 season but a victory for either side would set down a marker and potentially establish the winning team as favourites for the Premier League title, though Liverpool would have something to say about that.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has missed the last two matches due to injury but Thomas Tuchel remains hopeful that he will be able to return for the game against City, even if he hasn't returned to full training yet.

If fit, he will come in to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mendy could start behind a back three of Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger.

Chelsea now have a fully fit midfield which means Tuchel will need to pick two out of N'Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Saul Niguez for the two central midfield spots.

Kante and Jorginho will probably get the nod, with Reece James and Marcos Alonso in the wingback roles.

Christian Pulisic might be available again, but we should still see Mason Mount and Kai Havertz in behind Romelu Lukaku in attack.

Timo Werner will likely be involved at some point, though, as Tuchel hinted that we will see him paired with Lukaku more often moving forward.

Manchester City have more selection issues than Chelsea, particularly in defence.

John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are still missing after picking up injuries on international duty, which means Nathan Ake will partner Ruben Dias.

With Oleksandr Zinchenko likely out, Joao Cancelo will start on the left with Kyle Walker on the right.

Ilkay Gundogan is facing a fight to be fit but could make it, and that would mean a midfield three of the German alongside Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho as there are also doubts over the fitness of Rodri.

In attack, Pep Guardiola may decide to unleash Phil Foden and Jack Grealish together, with Ferran Torres in the central role.
