About Liga MX

Founded in 1943, the Liga MX is the top division of Mexican football. It contains 18 teams. It is split into two tournaments. The Apertura tournament runs from July to December and the Clausura runs from January to May, with the top eight teams over the separate competitions going into a play-off tournament to determine the champions of Mexico. The Liga MX has promotion and relegation linked to the Ascenso MX, the second tier. One team is relegated from the Liga MX, and one team is promoted from the Ascenso MX, each season. Fifty-six different clubs have competed since its inception, with America winning the most titles (13). The competition’s all-time leading goalscorer is Evanivaldo Castro (312 goals).
