About Ireland

The Republic of Ireland national team enjoyed their period of most success, in the late 1980s and early 90s, calling upon the organisational skills World Cup winning player -and Englishman - Jack Charlton, whose tenure lasted for a decade between 1986 and 1996. After reaching Euro 1988 they famously beat England 1-0 though a late goal saw them eliminated by the Netherlands, but the maintained their good performances to reach their first ever World Cup in 1990. After a laborious group stage where they drew all three games against England, Egypt, and the Netherlands, they duly eliminated Romania on penalties, David O'Leary slotting home the winning kick after Paddy Bonner's save. During that competition, they were given the honour of an audience with Pope John Paul II, the only nation to do so. Success followed in USA in1994 as they claimed the scalp of three-time World Cup winners Italy, Ray Houghton got the solitary goal. The Italians would go on to reach the final, while a Dennis Bergkamp-inspired Dutch knocked the Irish out in the Round of 16. In 2002, the Boys in Green qualified for the knockout stages again before they were eliminated by Spain, but the tournament will forever be remembered for an infamous public spat between manager Mick McCarthy and talismanic captain, Roy Keane, which led to the Manchester United midfielder leaving the competition behind. Ireland exceeded expectations at Euro 2016, defeating Italy before losing in unfortunate circumstances to hosts France. Their record appearance maker and record goalscorer is Robbie Keane, who has 68 goals in 146 caps.
