About Hungary

Hungary were once a superpower of international football, and revolutionised the sport in the 1950s with their entertaining displays on the world stage. In 1938 and 1954, they finished second in the World Cup, losing to Italy and West Germany respectively, but boasted such players as Real Madrid star Ferenc Puskas, Sandor Kocsis, Jozsef Bozsik and Nandor Hidegkuti, with the players combining to form a devastating attacking quartet. Victory in the World Cup may have eluded ‘The Golden Team’, but they had an undeniable affect on the how the game was played back in the 50s. Unfortunately, the nation has suffered a major decline, and as of 2018 have not qualified for a World Cup since 1986 in Mexico. They have qualified for three European Championship tournaments, with their best performance coming in 1964 when they finished third. Puskas is Hungary’s top goalscorer, and also has the honour of having a Fifa accolade named after him for the best goal each season – the Puskas Award.
