Ghana have won the Africa Cup of Nations on four occasions in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982. Despite conquering their continent a number of times, it would be as late as 2006 until the nation reached the Fifa World Cup, with that edition taking place in Germany. In their debut they qualified from a group which included Italy, Czech Republic, and the United States, but lost out to Brazil in the last 16, losing 3-0. In the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, they became only the third African nation in history to reach the quarter-final of the tournament, but their journey would be cruelly cut short thanks to Luis Suarez of Uruguay. In the final moments of the match, Suarez prevented a certain goal with a deliberate handball on the goal line, receiving a red card, but Asamoah Gyan crashed the subsequent penalty against the bar, gifting Uruguay the opportunity to progress to the semi-final on penalties. The 2014 World Cup in Brazil was marred by disputes between players and Ghana dignitaries, with poor planning and reported unpaid wages being cited as the reason for their poor performance and exit at the group stage. Gyan has the most goals and most caps for the Black Stars.
