About Georgia

The Georgia national football team previously came under the moniker of the Soviet Union, but unusually they did play a match against Lithuania under their own name in 1990 before declaring independence in 1991. Their first competitive fixture was against Moldova in the qualifiers for the 1996 European Championships, when they lost 1-0. They have never qualified for the World Cup or the Euros in their history, but have claimed some notable scalps in the past. In the qualifying stage for Euro 2008, they defeated Scotland 2-0 thanks to goals from Levan Mchedlidze and David Siradze, but ended up finishing seventh out of the eight teams in their group. Arguably the most famous result in Georgia’s history came in a friendly match in 2016 when they defeated reigning European champions, Spain, 1-0, thanks to a goal from Tornike Okriashvili. Levan Kobiashvili has the most appearances for his nation, while Shota Arveladze has scored the most goals.
