About Gabon

The Gabon national team’s origins can be traced back to the 1960s when they took part in the Friendship games, a tournament for French-speaking African nations which eventually became known as the African Games. Their first match saw them take on Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) which they lost 5-4. Gabon have never qualified for the Fifa World Cup, and decided not to enter the 1966 tournament along with all the other African nations in protest at there only being one place among all the African, Asian, and Oceanic countries. They have qualified for seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in their history, with their best finishes coming in 1996 and and 2012 when their campaign ended in the quarter-final. Didier Ovono has made the most appearances for his country, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Theodore Nzue Nguema and the joint-highest amount of goals.
