Front three rested? - How Liverpool could line up against Leicester?

Jurgen Klopp's side have several COVID cases, and with games coming thick and fast, his front three could be benched for this Carabao Cup tie

Liverpool host Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night looking to progress through to the semi-finals, but Jurgen Klopp will have to do so without some key players.

Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones have all missed the past two games after recording a positive COVID test before their win over Newcastle United last week, while Thiago Alcantara added himself to that list with his positive case ahead of the draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

All four will miss the quarter-final, while Klopp may take the chance to rest his favoured front three. It's been a hectic schedule, and it doesn't get any easier with the Boxing Day fixtures, so the German manager could do with keeping his very best players fresh and ready.

With Leicester struggling in the league, and also hit by injury issues and a couple of positive COVID cases, Liverpool will be confident of victory, so rotation may be inevitable.

Andrew Robertson will be suspended for the game as well, after his red card against Tottenham, while captain Jordan Henderson will once again miss out through illness.

But, how will they line up?

Alisson is likely to recive a rest so Caoimhin Kelleher will be stationed in goal. Neco Williams will give Trent Alexander-Arnold a well-deserved break, while Kostas Tsimikas will replace the suspended Robertson.

Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will partner up at centre-half.

Tyler Morton was handed a first Premier League start at the weekend, and he will continue in the middle of the park, playing alongside the experienced James Milner, and Naby Keita once more.

As for the forward line, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Diogo Jota could well be placed on the bench in case the Reds need a goal, but shouldn't start given the amount of football they've played recently.

Instead, Roberto Firmino will return to lead the line, while Takumi Minamino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will play on the flanks.
