About Eliteserien

Founded in 1937, the Eliteserien is the top division of Norwegian football. It contains 16 teams. The season runs from April to November, and teams play each other both home and away to fulfil a total of 30 games. The Eliteserien has promotion and relegation linked to the OBOS-ligaen, the second tier. Two teams are relegated from the Eliteserien, and two teams are promoted from the OBOS-ligaen, each season, with another third position decided via a relegation/promotion play-off. Sixty-six different clubs have competed since its inception, with Rosenborg winning the most titles (26). The competition's all-time leading goalscorer is Sigurd Rushfeldt (172 goals).
