About El Salvador

The El Salvador national team was established in 1921, with the inaugural squad featuring such national legends as Jose Pablo Huezo, Carlos Escobar Leiva, and Santiago Barrachin. Their first competitive match was against Costa Rica in the Independence Centenary Games, and their bold use of a 2-3-5 formation did not pay off as they eventually lost 7-0. El Salvador have competed in two World Cup tournaments in 1970 and 1982, but have failed to win a match, or even claim a point, over the six matches in which they have featured. They have only scored one goal at the tournament, through Ramirez Zapata, but it came in a 10-1 loss against Hungary. In 1963 El Salvador competed in the first CONCACAF Championship, and have earned more success in this competition than on the world stage. Their best result came in 1981 when they finished as runners-up, losing to Honduras. Alfredo Pacheco has the most appearances for his country, while Raul Diaz Arce has scored the most goals.
