About this derby

Poland is notorious for football violence and this is largely due to the rivalry between Wislaw Krakow and KS Cracovia, known as ‘The Holy War'. The two teams are from the city of Krakow and their respective stadiums are in close proximity. Wisla fans are known as ‘The Dogs’ by Cracovia fans, and Cracovia fans are known as 'The Jews' because of their historical Jewish roots. Both teams have violent sections of ultras, known as the Wisla Sharks and the Anti-Wisla. The desire for this match to be played was so strong that even World War II could not prevent it. After the German occupation in 1939 it was organised in secret and took place in smaller grounds, with thousands of fans in attendance. In 2006, an anniversary match took place between the teams and eight fans died in the build-up despite a huge police presence. They have only been on each other’s side on one occasion in 1990 when the actions of police were deemed too brutal, leading to the firms joining together to fight the authorities.
