The Ecuador national team have qualified for three World Cup tournaments in their history in 2002, 2006, and 2014. Agustin Delgado scored the first-ever goal in the World Cup for his nation as they were defeated 2-1 by Mexico, and although they went on to defeat Croatia in their group in 2002, they were knocked out in the first round. Their best performance in a World Cup came four years later in Germany when they progressed out of a group which included the hosts, Poland, and Costa Rica. Delgado was amongst the goals again, scoring two in the first round. They were eliminated in the Round of16 by England thanks to a free-kick from David Beckham. Ecuador have the unfortunate record, along with Venezuela, of being one of only two South Americans nations never to have won the Copa America. Ivan Hurtado has the most caps for his country and is the sixth-highest international appearance maker of all time. Delgado has scored the most goals.
