About DR Congo

Under the Democratic Republic of Congo name, the country has not qualified for a World Cup and has not made a significant impact on the football world or indeed in Africa. They previously featured in the 1974 edition of the tournament where they lost against Scotland, were destroyed 9-0 by Yugoslavia, and were defeated by Brazil, but it was the match against Selecao in which one of the most bizarre and memorable moments in World Cup history happened. During a Brazil free-kick, Zaire defender Mwepu Ilunga broke away from the defensive wall and cleared the ball upfield, receiving a yellow card in the process. Commentators at the time suggested this signified Africa’s naivety in football, but Ilunga has since suggested it was a protest against domestic football authorities who were not providing sufficient wages to the players. DR Congo/Zaire have had much better success in the Africa Cup of Nations and have won the competition on two occasions, in 1968 and 1974.
