The Czech Republic has a proud footballing history, both under Czechoslovakia before the dissolution of that state in 1993, and with the Czech Republic and Slovakia subsequently fielding their independent national teams thereafter. As Czechoslovakia they were runners up in 1934 and 1962, while as the Czech Republic they have only took part in one edition in 2006, winning one match before being eliminated at the group stage. Their crowning achievement came in the European Championship in 1976 when they triumphed, defeating world champions, West Germany, in the final. It was won on penalties, with the winning kick came from Antonin Panenka, who chipped down the middle in an iconic moment. In Euro 96 in England, the Czech Republic reached the final, knocking out well-fancied France along the way, before falling to Germany in extra time. Petr Cech holds the record for most appearances, while former Borussia Dortmund striker Jan Koller is their top goalscorer. Domestically, the most prestigious club teams are Viktoria Plzen, Slavia Prague, and Sparta Prague.
