Cyprus' first international encounter was a 3-1 loss against Israel in Tel Aviv. In 1968, they recorded their first competitive victory when they defeated Switzerland 2-1 in a European Championship qualifying match, but they failed to make it to the tournament proper. Indeed, Cyprus have never qualified for the finals of the European Championship or a World Cup in their history. In 2000 they recorded their highest-ever win when they defeated Andorra 5-0 in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, while in the qualifiers for Euro 2000 they emerged victorious against the might of Spain as well as Israel and San Marino. One of Cyprus’ most famous victories took place in the qualifiers for Euro 2008 as they beat the Republic of Ireland 5-2 in Nicosia, with Michalis Konstantinou and Constantinos Charalambides each scoring two goals and Alexandros Garpozis getting one. Ioannis Okkas has the most caps for his nation.
