Being part of the nation of Yugoslavia up until their independence in 1991 means that Croatia are in the embryonic stage of their football history. In 1993 the country was officially recognised by FIFA and UEFA, and their first competitive fixture was against Estonia during the qualification process for the 1996 European Championship. Croatia has only failed to qualify for two major tournaments since – World Cup 2010 and Euro 2000. When Croatia was recognised by FIFA, they were 125th in the world, but by the end of the World Cup in France five years later, they would be up to third. 1998 gave us a glimpse into the true talents available, the most prominent players of their semi-final run being Robert Prosinecki and striker Davor Suker, who topped France 98’s goalscoring charts as Croatia finished third. Suker is the top scorer in Croatia’s history with 45 strikes, while Darijo Srna has made the most appearances for his country with 134 caps. In more modern times, the Vatreni can call upon the likes of Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic, Mateo Kovacic, and Ivan Rakitic who guided the team to their first World Cup final in 2018. In domestic football, the biggest teams are arch rivals, Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split.
