Colombia are currently enjoying their second golden generation of international football. Pele famously tipped them to win the World Cup in 1994 after a stunning qualifying campaign which included a 5-0 victory over Argentina, but they were to exit amid tragedy after the group stages. That team in the USA in 1994 contained superb ball players such as the effervescent Carlos Valderrama, Freddy Rincon and Faustino Asprilla, but after Andres Escobar's own goal ensured the team went home, he was brutally murdered on his return to his homeland in a gangland hit. The nation suffered a period of reflection, struggling at France in 1998, losing to England and Romania, before winning the Copa America in 2001 in acrimonious circumstances, with Argentina pulling out over security concerns. Poor qualifying results for 2002, 2006 and 2010 followed but the team found a new generation of talent in time for their World Cup 2014 campaign. Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado were stars of the 2014 World Cup, with James collecting the Golden shoe after scoring six goals. The Colombian domestic league is known as the Categoria Primera A; the team who competed in 1994 were almost all based at home, but now, with stars regularly leaving to join European clubs, the standard of competition is not what it once was.
