About Canada

Even with football not being the most popular sport in Canada, they have made their mark on occasion. In the 1904 Olympic Games, before the creation of the World Cup, they claimed the gold medal in the United States. Their greatest moment came in the 1980s when they won the 1985 CONCACAF championship to qualify for the 1986 World Cup – their only appearance at the tournament proper. Canada were drawn in a group alongside the Soviet Union, France, and Hungary, and failed to win a point or score a goal. Canada is the only national team to have won the Gold Cup aside from regional footballing superpowers, Mexico and the United States, and emerged as champions in 2000. In the final they took on Colombia and won 2-0 thanks to goals from Jason de Vos and Carlo Corazzin, with the latter scoring the most goals in the tournament. Craig Forrest was named as the Most Valuable Player. Julian de Guzman has made the most appearances for his nation, while Dwayne De Rosario has netted the most goals. Domestically, Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Montreal Impact are the most reputable clubs, and feature in Major League Soccer in the USA.
