Mainz picked up a vital three points in their battle against relegation on Wednesday after heaping more misery on Dortmund with a 2-0 away win, one day after BVB lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern.
After the events of yesterday, Lucien Favre’s men went into the game against Mainz with nothing to play for, and it showed as they went down to the fighting visitors.
Dortmund enjoyed the majority of possession (70%) and fired seven shots on goal, but they lacked an edge in key areas, with Mainz taking advantage of their own key moments to score two goals.
The first was scored in emphatic fashion by Jonathan Burkardt, who stooped inside the box to bullet a brilliant header across into the left corner after an excellent cross from Ridle Baku.
After the break, the home side looked a bit more sprightly, but the wind was completely taken from their sails just five minutes into the second half after Lukasz Piszczek clumsily gave away a penalty, which was subsequently dispatched by Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Mainz truly fought for their victory in the end, outperforming Dortmund in various key areas such as interceptions (17-15) and clearances (24-5).
With the Bundesliga over and their exit from the Champions League already confirmed, Dortmund find themselves now actually looking over their shoulder at RB Leipzig just three points behind.
