Bolivia featured in the inaugural World Cup tournament in 1930 in Uruguay but lost both of their matches 4-0 against Yugoslavia and Brazil. In the 1950 edition they did not perform much better, losing their only match 8-0 against Uruguay. It would take 44 years for them to qualify again, for USA 94, and took on Germany in their opening match. They put up a strong fight against the defending champions but the match turned when their best player, Marco Etcheverry, reacted in an incident with Lothar Matthaus and was sent off. Bolivia never recovered, and Jurgen Klinsmann scored the winner. They drew and lost their next two matches, but did score their first ever goal at a World Cup against Spain when Erwin Sanchez netted a consolation in a 3-1 loss against La Roja. They have gained better success closer to home, winning the Copa America once on home soil in 1963. Ronald Raldes has the most caps for his nation, while Joaquin Botero has scored the most goals.
