About Benin

The Benin national football team was previously known as the Dahomey national team until 1975. They have not qualified for the Fifa World Cup, and have only won nine World Cup qualifying fixtures out of 39 in their history. Since the turn of the millennium, their fortunes have improved as they qualified for the 2004, 2008, and 2010 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. However, they have lost eight out of their nine matches in the tournament, drawing the other against Mozambique in 2010 – a 2-2 result. They have featured in the West African Cup on three occasions, but again failed to make it out of the group stage. In 2016, Benin were suspended from competing in Fifa tournaments after a court ruling in the country blocked the upcoming scheduled elections, but the ban has since been lifted. Stephane Sessegnon has made the most appearances for his nation, and has scored the most goals, joint with Razak Omotoyossi.
