About Belgium

The Belgium national team is currently enjoying its most successful generation of stars, with players regularly competing in the top divisions of European football. The national team was previously at its strongest in the 1980s, with the likes of Eric Gerets, Jan Cuelemans and Enzo Scifo guiding the team to fourth place at World Cup 1986, after being eliminated by a Diego Maradona-inspired Argentina. The team, however, struggled to produce top stars through the next decade and despite being joint hosts of Euro 2000, failed to progress beyond the group stages. Recently, however, the team has produced world class players such as Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois and Vincent Kompany, and have competed in the latter stages of tournaments, including the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup in France. Their domestic competition, the Jupiler Pro League, has Anderlecht and Club Brugge among its biggest clubs, and though they have struggled with the migration of players into the Netherlands Eredivisie, it still remains a competitive league with different winners.
