The Belarus national football team previously played under the union of the USSR before declaring independence in 1991. In their short history, they have not yet qualified for a World Cup or European Championship competition, though they have achieved some notable results. They defeated Netherlands in qualifying for Euro 96 and secured two impressive draws versus Italy in the qualifiers for Euro 2000. The closest Belarus have come to reaching the World Cup was for the 2002 edition, when they were one match away from securing a playoff against Germany.
