The Austria national football team is renowned for its solidity and organisation, and has used these qualities to qualify for seven World Cup tournaments. In the 1930s they were deemed to be among the best, most progressive sides in the world, threatening England's position of dominance over the international game. Their best performance at the World Cup came back in 1954 when they finished third in the home of their neighbours, Switzerland, largely due to the performance of their star striker, Erich Probst. Their most recent outing was in 1998 when they exited at the group stages despite not losing a match (three draws), and they featured the talents of Toni Polster and Andreas Herzog. But it has been a barren spell since, with an outing at Euro 2008 their only major tournament since '98, and even then it was as their role as joint hosts. In their two outings in the Euros they have failed to win a single match. Herzog has the most caps for his country with 103, while their top goalscorer is Polster. In the Austria Bundesliga Red Bull Salzburg have been completely dominant in recent seasons, putting the likes of Austria Wien, Rapid Wien, and Sturm Graz in the shade.
