About Australia

Australia, nicknamed the Socceroos took their time to become a regular fixture at the World Cup, but in recent years they have qualified - and competed - at the event. After heartbreak in losing in playoffs to Iran in 1998 and Uruguay in 2002, the supposed 'Golden Generation' - including Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell, and Mark Schwarzer - finally qualified in 2006 under the talismanic Dutchman Guus Hiddink. From there they qualified from a tricky group and were denied further progresion courtesy of a hugely controversial Francesco Totti penalty in injury time, allowing Italy to reach the Round of 16. In 2010 they made a good fist of qualifying from another tough section but ultimately lost out to Germany and Ghana. A switch to the Asian qualifying group (AFC) meant tougher opposition that they would face in Oceania (their victory, 31-0 over American Samoa in 2001, remains an all-time international record) but more places available to reach the tournament proper, though their performance in World Cup 2014 in Brazil was their weakest to date, losing all three matches and conceding nine goals in the process. Tim Cahill, stalwart of all three recent World Cup campaigns, is their record international goalscorer.
