About Armenia

Armenia was part of the Soviet Union up until declaring independence in 1991, while their own national team was not officially registered with Fifa until a year later. Their first match as an independent nation was up against Moldova in a fixture which ended in a goalless draw. Since then they have took part in every single qualifying campaign for the World Cup and the European Championship, but has failed to make it to the finals. They have won just 10 out of 62 World Cup qualifiers and 12 out of 28 Euros qualifiers. The closest they came to qualifying for a major tournament was their campaign for Euro 2012 in which they finished third in their group behind Russia and Ireland, despite scoring the most goals. In the last match against the Irish, goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky was controversially sent off after the referee, Eduardo Gonzalez judged that he had handled the ball outside the area, even if subsequent replays proved this incorrect. Armenia would go on to lose the match 2-1, and Gonzalez would resign from his refereeing role thereafter. Sargis Hovsepyan has the most appearances for his nation, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan has scored the most goals.
