About Algeria

In 1962 Algeria gained independence from France and so their national team was born, taking over from the old FLN side. Their first entry into the World Cup was in Spain in 1982 when they were pitted against West Germany, Austria, and Chile. In a huge upset, they defeated one of the tournament favourites West Germany, 2-1, with Lakhdar Belloumi and Rabah Madjer getting the goals, before beating Chile, too, but they were eliminated on goal difference. They failed to make it out of the group stage in 1986 and 2010 too but their best moment was to come in 2014. They successfully progressed from a group containing South Korea, Belgium, and Russia, and became the first African team ever to score four or more goals in a World Cup match. They were eliminated in cruel fashion by eventual winners, Germany, in the next round when Mesut Ozil scored moments before penalties to win the match 2-1 for Die Mannschaft. Algeria has one Africa Cup of Nations title to their name which they won in 1990 while hosting the tournament. Belloumi has the most caps for his nation, while Abdelhafid Tasfaout has the most goals.
